It’s In the Auction

Auction #110 – May 5, 2012

Welcome to Auction #110. The auction will close at 11 p.m. CDT. Items receiving a bid in the last 15 minutes will remain open until they go 15 minutes without a bid.

I would like to give a huge "Thank You" to all the bidders in Auction #109. You turned what was destined to be a great one into an awesome one. The number of bidders is growing with each auction. And now for Auction #110. We think that we have another super group of glasses to look at. It should be fun.

Item #1 is another from the Popeye Coca Cola Kollect-A-Set series of test glasses. Geezil is one of the very hardest to find. This is only the second one I have seen in over 30 years of collecting Coca Cola glasses. Item #2 is another of the Warner Bros. "mistake glasses". Sylvester with no black -- amazing look! Pepsi and Warner Brothers names and logos intact. Item #3 is one that we are familiar with, but that does not detract from what it is. It is the famous, or maybe infamous, D.C. Joker. No question, the very hardest and seldom available glass from the Pepsi sponsored Super Series; often referred to as the "moon" series.

Items #4 and #5 are truly unique and will help dress up your display areas. Both are cardboard pieces advertising the Disney and Pepsi sponsored Rescuers eight glass set. Item #4 is 10 5/8" by 14" and is designed to hold the current week glass and the one for the next week. When you look at the pictures and see Rufus and Madam Medusa, please know they are not included. However, the entire set of eight is available in this auction. Item #5 is larger, 35 11/16" by 23 1/2" and shows Rufus beside a picture of the Orville glass. If you have these glasses in your collection, one or both of these items will add a new look to your display.

Item #6 is one of those glasses that has long been thought of as a test glass; however, enough have shown up to make me wonder if these were not a limited distribution. Not a common glass, but Sam the Eagle on a diver's stand with the McDonald's arches and information on the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics on the back makes this a must have item. Being bright and very colorful helps also.

Item #7 is listed as a Mystery Glass simply because it is. The owner of this glass, along with us, has no idea where it might have come from. Gary Cooper's name and image are on the inside back of the 3 3/8" rocks style glass. He can be viewed through a window on the front of the glass. "Theatre" is above the window and five line drawing "people" are below the window. No other information. Let us know what you know and we will put the information in the next newsletter. Does anyone have others in this series?

Item #8 is listed as a sports Mystery Glass, again because it is. Greg Luzinski is on a glass that is similar to but not exactly like the red and white Coca Cola Baseball Greats set. I have not researched this glass except to ask several of our sports collectors about it. No knowledge there. Test glass? Maybe? Look at the picture and see what you can find. Glass has his stats and Major League Baseball logo. No sponsor noted.

Item #9 is another of the extremely hard to find and seldom seen items. It is #2 in a known set of six Superman glasses from Spain. Sponsored by Coca Cola, it is a very hard set to complete. One of my friends who lives in Spain didn't complete his set until last year.

Item #10 is actually four items. Neat, attractive and hard to find Warner Bros. items that we put them together as a set. Each features light blue glass with a cobalt rim and handle on the items that have them. Each features a wrap around line of numerous Warner Bros characters in dark blue. There is a heavy tumbler [5 1/8"]; a stemmed goblet [6 1/16"]; a heavy mug [5 1/4"] and a beautiful 8 3/8" pitcher. They look great and will look even greater as part of your Warner Bros. collection.

Item #11 is one of the highly sought after "Mistake" glasses that seem to have had some limited distribution. While by no means common, some have shown up. It is the "Reverse Color" Wonder Woman from the 1978 Pepsi Super Heroes collection. Many of you have a hole in your collection that this one can fill.

Items #12 through #17 are all Warner Bros. items with the Brockway Company salesman sample stickers on the bottom. These will add a bit of value and talking points to your collection. We show #12 here: Tweety, F/BL LUN, but all are pictured on the picture pages.

Items #18 and #19 are both "Mystery" glasses. Item #18 gives you enough information that a bit of digging should come up with the information about it. A colorful Blue Flame character and with the name - Leon E. Ritenour - below. I'm sure with that information someone will discover what this one is. Item #19 is going to be much harder. It is a colorful clown head. No other information on the glass. The owner of this glass has several different ones and believes they may be a Ringling Bros set but he really doesn't know.

One of the truly unique mistake glasses in the Warner Bros. selection is Item #290. It is the "chocolate Taz". On the Taz, Daffy, hot dog interaction glass, Taz is a dark chocolate color rather than his normal light brown. Compare with Item #289 and see the great difference.

While this auction is filled with many sets we are only going to picture a few so we leave room for other items.

Many Disney glasses and sets including some extremely hard to find, and I may even say rare, glasses are available. Items #36, 37 and 38 are glass #1, 2 and 4 from the Canadian issued Incredible Journey set for the Disney movie. Items #79 and 80 are glass #4 and 6 from the Canadian issued, dual language, Big Red set from that Disney story. You want hard -- well these are about as hard as they come.

We have included in the Disney glasses a complete set of the characters at Disney World set. Sponsored by Coca Cola, this rarely seen set matches the same set issued at Disneyland. The Disney World set had little or no distribution. Each glass shows a character at Disney World with the Disney World Sleeping Beauty castle in white. Mistake alert. The Dumbo glass shown has the Disneyland castle, not the Disney World castle. So actually we do not have a complete set.

Unique items include five different Kentucky Derby Festival glasses, sponsored by Pepsi.

Items #173 through #177 are five of the very hard to find Raggedy Ann and Andy glasses. We do not see these everyday. If you like blue people, your hunt will turn up many Smurf glasses.

Sports fans? You will not be disappointed. Items #201 through #206 is a complete set of the Coca Cola baseball greats. Yastrzemski, Jackson, Seaver, Rose, Bench and Carew. All listed. Most of you have openings in this set you need to fill. A complete set of four Coca Cola sponsored Columbus Clippers set and all six of the Green Bay Packers set, including Vince Lombardi can be found in the listing.

The auction is loaded with great glasses. This hunting trip will be a fun filled adventure for you. Let me close by pointing out a few Warner Bros. items, of which there are many in this auction. Item #292 is another mistake glass with no Warner Bros. information on the glass. Items #355 through #366 is a very unique set from Six Flags. Four 6 1/8" tumblers, four small rocks style and four cups. All frosted and each four have the same pictures of Bugs, Marvin, Taz and Tweety.

Items #367, #368 and #370 are also tall 6 1/8" frosted glasses from Six Flags. Each has a different character [Sylvester, Taz, Wile and Marvin] against a background of colored blocks. There is the same image on both sides.

Now it is your turn. There's a great auction out there filled with many wonderful things to find. If you can't find something you need in this auction you just are not looking hard enough.

Go hunting and have fun. Carl and Mary

P. S. We will continue to try to use both the PGCA Club reference numbers as well as the reference numbers from the Tomart book.
